The cradle of the Renaissance, the Italian language and writers such as Dante, Petrarch, Machiavelli and Boccaccio, Florence also saw the emergence of visual artists such as Giotto, Brunelleschi, Donatello, Botticelli, Michelangelo and the universal genius Leonardo da Vinci, who left their mark on the city during a golden age of artistic creation.
