Throughout history, and particularly in the history of art, Christian iconography has served to communicate certain messages through symbols, icons, and representations that are perceptible to believers, in many cases replacing the written message.
Understanding Christian iconography in works of art is fundamental to identifying characters and their representations and to analyzing many works in the history of Western art.
