The Avant Garde movements

During the first decades of the 20th century, new currents began in the arts and literature that, following the legacy of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, sought the exaltation of Modernity.

These new currents were called the Avant Garde movements – manifestations in European arts and literature that provoked a rupture in Modern Art with what was the cultural tradition of previous centuries.

Consistent with the new social-political atmosphere, the new European avant garde artists stood out for their radicalism.

The goal of the avant garde was to harmonize aesthetic creation with the industrial and technological advances that began in the 19th century and continued through the following century.

Like the Impressionists and the Post-Impressionists, they strove to create a new aesthetic.

However, the breaking of standards, the departure from traditional and academic canons, and the constant questioning made it possible for them to go further than their predecessors.
