history of architecture

Treasures of architectureFrom the beginning of Time, Man felt the need to shelter himself against climate change and the danger represented by wild animals.

Building rudimentary constructions like huts, made out of branches and straw or taking advantage of existent caves.

Real history of architecture is only born when people learned to domesticate animals and cultivate the land.

By becoming sedentary the need arose for constructing sustainable public buildings that could also defend them.

Temples, tombs, palaces and watchtowers worthy of gods, priests, kings and soldiers could not be mud huts – mankind had to learn technical skills, expertise and aesthetics.

History of art has been studying the course of architecture since the Egyptian pyramids, Gothic cathedrals and Renaissance palaces, trying to answer questions like: who commissioned them?; who built them?; for whom was it intended?; and what was its purpose?

However, in a time so remote it becomes very difficult to answer these questions, especially when they have already disappeared, and all we have are some drawings or reports of its existence.

We know nonetheless, that the evolution of the history of architecture is linked to materials, construction skills, industrial revolutions and the progress of society – which creates new needs, such as hygiene, comfort, functionality, and new types of buildings, like airports, factories and museums.
